The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro Moros, commemorated Fisherman and Artisanal Aquaculture Day, highlighting the importance of these activities for the country’s economy and food sovereignty. During his visit to fishing facilities, Maduro announced 554 funding initiatives aimed at expanding fishing activities across the nation.

At the event, the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Juan Carlos Loyo, revealed that the sardine season will begin on March 15, 2025, in the states of Nueva Esparta and Sucre, emphasizing the high value of this species within Venezuela’s marine biodiversity.

President Maduro extended a “solidarity and revolutionary greeting” to fishermen and aquaculturists, reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting and optimizing their work. “We are here to increasingly support the men and women of the sea, of fishing, in their daily tasks,” stated the head of state, urging maritime workers to demonstrate their organizational capacity and daily effort.

Fisherman’s Day is celebrated every March 14 in Venezuela, a date established in 2010 by the late President Hugo Chávez to honor those who play a vital role in the national economy and in ensuring food sovereignty.

During the event, President Maduro also distributed 54 microloans to fishermen in the Rómulo Gallegos municipality of Cojedes state to develop the “Siembra de Coporo” project, part of the National Aquaculture Plan. 

Additionally, he emphasized the importance of expanding the “Venezuela Eats Fish” initiative and recommended that fish fairs reach Organized Communities, Communes, and Communal Circuits.

With an optimistic message, President Maduro concluded his speech by declaring, “In Venezuela, we have everything. Nothing and no one will stop us!” reaffirming his commitment to the sustainable development of aquaculture and artisanal fishing in the country.
